Is a Square Dining Table Right For You?

Dining room and breakfast room furnishings come in all shapes, sizes, styles and colors. One of the biggest decisions you will have to make in choosing the right furnishing for your space is the shape of the table. You can find traditional oval- and rectangular-shaped furnishings or you can choose between a more contemporary circular or square dining table. While each shape has its advantages, the square dining table is really increasing in popularity in fast way. Some of your friends or family may have such a table, and if you enjoy the look of this table, you are likely considering one for your dining space at home.

Is a square dining table right for your family and your space? Many dining spaces are designed to be rectangular in shape, and some areas such as breakfast areas are irregularly shaped. If you choose to put square furnishings in this kind of space, you really want to make sure that you have enough space to pull off the look without making your family and guests feel cramped. If the table doesn’t look quite right in the space, you can consider adding a china cabinet or baker’s rack to balance the symmetry of the room.

These tables usually offer seating for four to eight. Some come with an L-shaped bench, which will allow you to seat even nine or ten people if some are kids who can squeeze together on the bench. These tables don’t have the traditional “head of the table” spot and are more contemporary in use and ambiance. Some are elevated to give the table a bistro-style look. The larger tables are perfect for families who entertain a lot, as many offer seating for eight or a leaf piece that will adjust the table to accommodate up to eight.
